Roman Day

On Thursday 18th October, Kestrel class had a Roman day. Having already designed and made shields, the children made helmets in preparation for soldier training.

Roman soldiers have good appetites, so the children needed some sustenance and made some traditional Roman sweets, using dates, nuts, salt and honey. Some of them were even brave enough to try them!

Later in the afternoon the children practised marching and standing in battle lines and the famous tortuso defensive position.

After all that training they had earns some care free entertainment, and having made Roman coins could pay to watch The Rotten Romans.

What a fabulous day!

Homework - there will be no theme based homework this year but we do ask that you support and encourage your child to do the following:

Reading – at least 5 minutes every night. After your child reads to you, ask them simple questions about what they have just read to ensure they have understood it fully. Please feel free to write in any questions/comments you have in this diary and ensure you inform you child so that they can pass the diary onto us for viewing.

Spelling - Every Friday there will be a spelling test. Please assist you child with memorising the words and spelling patterns. The Look, Cover Write method may help. Ten spellings will be tested out of the list and out of order.

Times Tables - Your child will move through the 12 times tables after successfully completing the previous one. Times tables test may also include inverse calculations such as 24 ÷ 3 =) which helps assess children’s understanding of number.

I am looking forward to meeting you all at the parents evenings, please see the sheet on the classroom door to book a time.

Reports

It is nearly time for the children's reports to be sent home. As usual, we will be putting a photo from this year on the front of the report. If there is a particular one which has featured on a blog, and you would like it on your child's report, please let Mrs Allott know before Friday 12th July and we will ensure that it is used for the report.

Thank you.

Rand Farm Park

On Wednesday 3rd July, Kestrel Class went on a trip to Rand Farm Park near Lincoln. As it was raining slightly when we first arrived, some of us decided to go on the tractors and in the indoor play area.

Next, we had cuddles with some gorgeous baby guinea-pigs.

Feeding the donkeys.

No calves were harmed in the taking of this photograph (honestly!). The lamb in the right hand corner obviously decided it wanted to be famous too.

Big smiles all round!

Feeding time for the lambs.

Now onto the calves.

Thoughtful pig.

It's a tough life having all these admiring fans!

Outside again.

Meet Daisy the Jersey cow, whose milk is used to feed the lambs and calves. We learned how the cows are milked.

Getting ready for our tractor ride around the fields.

The end of a most enjoyable day!

Huge thanks to our helpers, Mrs Maksymiw-Magan and Mrs Streeter and also to Mrs Laing.

Pancakes

Okay, it might not be the normal time of year for discussing pancakes, but as part of our Science topic of Changing Materials, we decided to do some cooking.

First, we used our senses to smell, taste, feel, listen to (this one made us laugh!) and look at the properties of bread. Then we put it in the toaster and made the same observations after the bread had been heated.

After we had discussed the vocabulary for the changes that occur when bread is heated, we thought about food which changes from a liquid to a solid. This involved making a pancake batter with 300ml milk, 100g flour, a pinch of salt and 1 egg. (This also helped us to revise the measuring which we've been doing in Maths).

We realised that the egg hadn't disappeared, but that it had been combined with the other ingredients to form a liquid.

Then, we cooked the pancake batter and watched it turn from a liquid to a solid. The best bit was yet to come and was a good incentive for us to think of how to describe our observations.

After we talked about the changes that happened from the batter to the pancake, we ate it. (Most of us thought that was the best bit!)

Artwork inspired by nature

Our art topic this term is Mother Nature. This afternoon, we used a variety of materials to create a collage.
